KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s abrupt announcement, where he resigned as prime minister, marks the second time the same person has resigned from the prime ministership.
Just as he did in 2003, stepping down as the fourth prime minister, Monday’s announcement was unexpected, almost as unexpected as his return to power in 2018 as Malaysia’s seventh prime minister.
His second stint as premier of the Pakatan government lasted just 22 months - his first had lasted 22 years.A known automotive enthusiast, Dr Mahathir had introduced the first national car, Proton, in 1982 with the vision of turning Malaysia into a regional manufacturing powerhouse. He recently launched the third national car project.
During his brief second tenure, Dr Mahathir received multiple international awards including Japan’s highest award, the"Grand Cordon of the Order of the Paulownia Flowers" conferred by Emperor Akihito of Japan.
