KUALA LUMPUR: The Foodbank Malaysia programme has benefited nearly 46,000 households across the country besides saving 1,055 tonnes of food since its launch in August until February this year, says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

“We can distribute this food to others. So, we shouldn’t just discard them and let them go to waste,” the Deputy Prime Minister said during the launch of the programme for the Pandan parliamentary constituency at SM Pandan Mewah yesterday.

Dr Wan Azizah said under the initiative, the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry had reached out to food producers, restaurants and hotels, as well as strategic partners such as Mutiara Food Bank, Food Aid Foundation and Kechara Soup Kitchen to assist. She said in her constituency, the programme would be managed by the main strategic partner Kechara Soup Kitchen with the cooperation of a local NGO – Voice of Pandan.

“These NGOs will collect food from hypermarkets and supermarkets and distribute it once a week to targeted groups here in Pandan.Dr Wan Azizah said among the supermarkets involved were Tesco, Econsave, The Store, NSK and Segi. She said the programme was an initiative by the government to reduce the cost of living and food wastage. In a related matter, Dr Wan Azizah said following the National Action Council on the Cost of Living meeting on Feb 15, the government had decided to include higher education institutions nationwide in the programme.
