On Thursday, more than one hundred teachers from at least 35 Houston ISD campuses scheduled doctor’s appointments and called in sick to spotlight the ongoing concerns and hostile teaching and learning environments.

Nicolas has been working from home for the past three months and misses being in the classroom with his students. “Which is very sad, because I’ve been in the district for a long time, but I can’t continue with this environment, and I can’t teach children poorly. I have standards for myself, I have standards for my children and what they’ll be doing, and this system would force me to teach poorly, and I won’t do that to my kids,” the teacher said.
