Mamelodi Sundowns began their CAF Champions League journey with a clash against Bumamuru FC in the first round at the National Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Brazilians, who have dominated the DStv Premiership for the last six seasons, haven’t been able to lay claim to a second continental title since 2016 and were eliminated in the semi-finals by Wydad Casablanca last season.
Prior to the International break, the Brazilians needed a last-minute strike from Khuliso Mudau to avoid a MTN8 semi-final first-leg defeat against Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs. Bumamuru do not enter the clash with the greatest of form and picked up a 1-0 loss to Tigres Noir during a league meeting in the Burundian top-flight two weeks ago.
Unlike Masandawana, who are riding the crest of the wave in the Premiership, the host languish in mid-table and in a disappointing 12th spot. It’s going to be the first-ever encounter at any level between the Brazilians and their counterparts from the Burundian league.
