Opinion: Douglas Schoen: Biden should take advantage of chaos in the Kremlin
For roughly 36 hours last weekend, the world held its breath as Russia descended into chaos amid an armed coup, in which the caterer-turned-warlord Yevgeny Prigozhin and his Wagner Group mercenaries raced toward Moscow after seizing the city of Rostov-on-Don.
There is little question that Putin has been thoroughly humiliated by this attempted coup. The speed at which an armored column of mutineers advanced nearly 400 miles with minimum opposition exposed the weaknesses of the Kremlin’s forces.
While Biden has led a robust Western response to Putin’s invasion, on the other side of aisle, Republicans – particularly those on the far right – are exhibiting a declining willingness to continue supporting Ukraine. McConnell followed up with a shot at the far-right wing of the GOP, saying, “I know there are some voices of opposition…but, the amount of money we’ve spent, sent to Ukraine is about .02 percent of our gross national product.”
