PETALING JAYA: The door hasn’t entirely been shut on shuttlers whose bid to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 has been left hanging in the balance due to Covid-19 pandemic.

The Badminton World Federation will be re-evaluating existing regulations pertaining to the Olympic and Paralympic qualification system now that the Games have been postponed to 2021.

“We will review any impacts on the Olympic and Paralympic qualification system to ensure a fair solution is found to qualify players for the postponed Games.” All four pairs still had a mathematical chance to qualify before the Covid-19 pandemic forced BWF to shut down its World Tour and other lower-tier tournaments, all of which were Olympics qualifiers.

That’s because the absence of tournaments are going to have a huge impact on players’ ranking. Many of them will not be able to defend the points won from the same tournament they took part in last year. BWF have given their full backing to the organisers for “making the right decision” to defer the Tokyo 2020 Games.
