ZURICH: President Donald Trump’s eldest son warned against investing in China during an event for investors on Thursday in Zurich, even as his father’s administration has pushed forward on plans to improve commercial ties between the two countries.
“I wouldn’t,” Donald Trump Jr said when asked at the invitation-only event if he would invest in China. “I don’t think we can pretend they’re an ally. That would be, I think, foolish. ” Trump Jr, who shares the position of executive vice president of the Trump Organization with his brother Eric, has pursued a string of foreign investments and development deals since his father returned to office.
He told the Swiss audience he was concerned in particular by a Chinese legal system he believes is tilted against foreign entities.
“I can’t name someone who is not Chinese, who has done business in China, who ever won a lawsuit,” Trump Jr said. The comments came as the US trade representative on Thursday opened a public comment process seeking to implement a “Board of Trade” negotiated by the US president and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, during a meeting last month in Beijing.
Officials have said the countries are seeking to identify around US$30 billion in goods from each country that could be traded without risk of national security concerns, with an eye toward reducing tariffs on those products. Xi and Trump have reached a relative détente on trade after the US president sparked a tit-for-tat tariff war shortly after reaching office, striking an agreement last year that saw both sides reduce their levies.
During their most recent meeting, Trump downplayed longstanding concerns from US companies about corporate espionage and intellectual property theft in China, saying that Washington also engaged in spycraft.
