Special counsel Jack Smith looked over to Donald Trump during the arraignment of Trump in a federal courtroom in Washington on Thursday. Smith's glance toward Trump came the second time the two appeared in a courtroom together.
Smith brought charges against Trump related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election after a grand jury in the nation's capital voted in favor of the charges.Special counsel Jack Smith, for a brief moment, gazed toward the defense table, appeared to be looking at Trump and/or attorneys around him.
Trump pleaded not guilty to the four charges levied against him in the federal court in Washington. The charges against the former president included conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
The next hearing in the 2020 election case is scheduled for Aug. 28 before Judge Tanya Chutkan after the arraignment was presided over by Magistrate Judge Moxila A. Upadhyaya.Trump's arraignment in Washington on Thursday marks the third time this year he has appeared before a court after being indicted.
The former president is widely expected to be indicted in Fulton County, Georgia, in the coming weeks on different charges related to alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump lost the 2020 election, and the state of Georgia, to now-President Joe Biden.
