“Puerto Rico has been taken care of better by Donald Trump than by any living human being. I think the people of Puerto Rico understand it. But you do have a mayor of San Juan that frankly doesn’t know what she’s doing.”

President Donald Trump, who said this week that Puerto Rico should not receive another dime in disaster aid, claimed that he had done more for the U.S. territory than “any living human being,” on Thursday.

According to Republican Senator Marco Rubio, Trump told Republicans at a closed-door meeting Tuesday that funding to rebuild Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria “is way out of proportion to what Texas and Florida and others have gotten.” Appropriations Chairman Patrick Leahy and Schumer sent a letter to a number of White House officials this week claiming that millions in disaster aid approved by Congress for Puerto Rico still remains in the Treasury and has not yet made its way to the island.

The president has also repeatedly claimed that Puerto Rico received $91 billion in aid. It is unclear where the president is getting these figures. It is similar to the amount of money Puerto Rico has estimated was done by the hurricane, but not to the amount that has been approved in aid by Congress. The Washington Post estimates that about $24.7 billion in aid has been approved. That’s similar to the $29 billion in aid Texas received after Hurricane Harvey.
