Hamish McLennan has declared the blockbuster group game against Wales as Australia’s most important match since the 2015 World Cup final.

Wallabies veteran James Slipper has warned younger teammates about the pitfalls of social media ahead of a blockbuster World Cup outing against Wales that Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan says is the country’s most important game since the 2015 final against New Zealand.

Last weekend’s shattering 22-15 loss to Fiji has ignited fierce debate in Australia about the team’s standing in world rugby. “My advice would be not to read it and then to stay off social media but, realistically, that’s not going to happen,” Slipper said. “It’s everywhere. Everywhere you look there’s an article or a podcast ... so it’s hard for young players where they get sent that social media directly to them, they get tagged in it, their friends send it to them, their family are reading it, so it’s very hard to escape.

Before the World Cup, Slipper addressed Australian players and shared his wisdom about dealing with the pressure that comes with going to battle in rugby’s showpiece tournament.
