A Western Sydney mayor has hit back at Waleed Aly after The Project host claimed the “biggest” cause of the failed referendum was less-educated people who did not comprehend the Voice.

On Monday, the veteran Project host suggested higher education was “the biggest dividing line” between Yes and No voters.

“The biggest dividing line seems to have been education. So, if you were in a seat with high levels of tertiary education, bachelor or post grad you were at the very top end of the ‘Yes’ vote.“That’s not to say people who were educated know what they’re doing and people who don’t have tertiary education don’t.”Waleed pointed out that education was a divide in the Yes and No camps. “Firstly, I want to say to the people of Western Sydney, commentary that says we’re not smart out here so we didn’t vote for the Voice is pretty disrespectful. People here are very intelligent, they get what is going on,” he told Mr Fordham on Tuesday morning. “Number one, there’s a lot of new migrants, new Australians who come out here, they come from war-torn countries, countries that don’t have a thriving democracy like we do.
