Mr. Cherry’s ouster from “Hockey Night in Canada” emanates from commentary this past weekend, in which he targeted Canadian immigrants, who he claimed were failing to show proper respect to the country’s veterans. “You people who come here, you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple of bucks for poppies or something like that,” said Mr. Cherry, in his weekly six- to seven-minute segment called Coach’s Corner. Soldiers, he said, “paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada. These guys paid the biggest price.”
Mr. Cherry’s comments also drew widespread pushback in Canada, including from Canada’s Defense Minister, Harjit Sajjan.Mr. Cherry was quoted Monday in The Toronto Sun newspaper as saying he stands by what he said: “Everybody in Canada should wear a poppy to honor our fallen soldiers.”
