Ger O'Riordan told the Irish Mirror he believes the song is a “testament to Ireland and its own past”

A family member of the late Cranberries singer Dolores O'Riordan has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding Zombie being adopted as an Irish rugby anthem.

The song was originally released in 1994, on the album No Need to Argue, and was written in response to an IRA bomb attack in Warrington the previous year which claimed the lives of two children aged three and 12. Ger, who is also a musician based in Limerick and has played a spate of gigs around the city, explained: “I think it's a suitable song. Taking into account the subject of the song and the struggle the Irish went through during the troubles I think it sets as a good anthem to sports events as it keeps light of the aforementioned struggles.
