As of September, Barkley’s Bookshelf had already given away more than 500 books in six months and had several collection and donation events lined up for the community.
“Everybody wants to help with this,” she said. “This is a win-win for these kids and for the community because in order to be productive citizens kids have to be able to read. Reading rates are down because of the pandemic, so we're further behind. We’re trying to get kids caught up or ahead of the game if we can.”Barkley's Bookshelf, founded in March, has already given more than 600 books out to children in the northwest Houston community.
“I continue to be amazed at their generosity and their true desire to make a difference for people who need a helping hand,” Ryan said. “They have literally changed lives, making transportation available to people who could not afford it on their own. And now, in this case with Pancho, not only will they make it possible for him to continue to drive, but repairing his vehicle will allow him to continue to bring others to our Day Center.
