OKAYAMA, Japan—Anyone who has tried folding and unfolding a piece of paper many times until it tears has an idea of what obsesses the engineers at Yuasa System Co.
The company’s obsession is a lucrative one these days, now that smartphone makers led by Samsung Electronics Co. are trying to bring out foldable phones. Samsung had to postpone the rollout of its pioneering Galaxy Fold in April after reviewers found its foldable screen malfunctioned.
