Daniel King, 30, was pronounced dead at Inspira Medical Center on July 9 at 11:37 p.m.

King was being held in custody at the state police’s Bridgeton Station in Upper Deerfield after he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer in Fairfield, officials said.

He suffered a medical episode around 8 p.m. on July 8 and became unresponsive, authorities said. Troopers performed life-saving efforts before he was brought to the hospital. His condition continued to worsen while in the hospital, leading to his death the following night, according to the incident report.

A trooper had responded to a home on Fordville Road in Fairfield on July 8 after King requested an escort to retrieve property at the residence. King then became confrontational and assaulted the trooper before two civilians intervened, the report said. The Attorney General is investigating the death under state guidelines that call for a review of all deaths that occur during an encounter with members of law enforcement or while a person is in police custody.
