Surgeons who also conduct important biomedical research are struggling to secure research funding. This “broken pipeline” could spell extinction for surgeon-scientists and slow innovations for patients if something isn’t done, caution experts from UVA Health. Researchers led by Bruce Schirmer, MD

Surgeon-scientists are facing challenges in securing continuous research funding, threatening surgical innovations and potentially affecting patient treatments, according to recent research. The study highlights that while early career surgeon-researchers obtain initial grants, they struggle to maintain funding due to heavy clinical demands and a need to uphold surgical skills, potentially hindering advances in various medical fields.

The reasons for this are complex, Schirmer and colleagues say in a new scientific paper, but include the heavy clinical demands surgeons face and the ongoing need to maintain and refine their skills. This often leaves them with little time to compete for research funding and to conduct research that would ultimately benefit patients.
