Disenchanted producer Barry Josephson defends the Enchanted sequel going straight to DisneyPlus 👀 'I was excited... for Disney to be the preeminent streaming family service, why not make things exclusively streaming? Two and two made four to me.' 😯

Disenchanted producer Barry Josephson defends the decision to give the film an exclusive streaming release on Disney+. Disenchanted is the long-awaited sequel to the hit 2007 romantic comedy Enchanted, which achieved critical acclaim for its satirical take on Disney animated features. Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, James Marsden, and Idina Menzel will all be returning to reprise their roles for the sequel.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with Deadline, Josephson defends the decision to give Disenchanted a streaming release rather than a theatrical release. The decision is in line with other recent releases that have opted for the streaming route, but not everyone has warmed to the idea yet. However, for Josephson, with Disney+ marking one of the top streamers in the world, it only made sense to make Disenchanted a streaming exclusive.

This was a situational thing. The movie was developed as a box office moive. My development toward getting a greenlight, happened right in the midst of Covid, and as our whole world was changing and where streaming became more important. When I got the call, ‘What do you think of this being a streaming film?’, for me, I was excited.

Scarlett Johansson's lawsuit against Disney+ for the streaming release of Black Widow sparked interesting conversations about whether a streaming release could hurt a film's performance. Meanwhile, theaters have also expressed concern about streaming services taking away from their business. Regardless, the streaming release trend is likely here to stay.

While some of these films might've performed well at the box office, companies like Disney are making a different financial calculus when sending them straight to digital. Granted, it is more difficult to gauge an individual movie's streaming performance compared to theatrical earnings, particularly since companies tend to keep viewership data close to the chest.
