The Commission for Regulation of Utilities declared a ban on disconnections from December 1 to January 31 for those who fall behind on their bills

Households in arrears will not have their electricity or gas supply cut off during the months of December and January, it has been confirmed.CRU has also put in place an extended six-month moratorium from today to the end of March 2024 for billpayers who are deemed vulnerable.

This ban is in addition to other customer protections for the winter months announced by the CRU in August following a review of retail data and feedback. These include longer repayment periods, pay-as-you-go options and financial hardship meters offering better value. Vulnerable customers, who are registered as being critically dependent on electrically-powered devices, cannot be disconnected for reasons of non-payment at any time and this protection remains in place.

She added: "Moratoria on disconnections are vital in providing support and peace of mind to customers during the winter period.
