We chat with MeetCute director Alex Lehmann about deconstructing romcom and time travel tropes in his new peacock film, and his work with Pete Davidson and Kaley Cuoco:
From director Alex Lehmann, Meet Cute is a rom-com with a twist coming to Peacock on Wednesday, September 21. When Sheila and Gary run into each other at a bar, it's almost as if the two are made for each other. However, things are rarely as perfect as they seem. Sheila isn't kidding when she calls herself a time traveler, and she's been reliving the night of their first date on a loop.
Alex Lehmann: Yeah, the truth is, I first passed on the script when I got it because I was getting so many scripts and I only read like the first ten or fifteen pages, and I was like, "This is just a rom-com. Why would they call me for a rom-com? I'm not the right person for this." Not even an ego thing, it was just like, "I don't even really like rom-coms, so this doesn't feel right.
Alex Lehmann: I made movies as a kid and I went to college to be a director. And then the more pragmatic side of me was like, "Well, people are going to pay me to be a cameraman, but they're not going to pay me to be a director." Honestly, it all worked out really well because I don't think I would have had much to say about life in my 20s or early 30s. I needed to kind of experience more to have a voice or a perspective on things.
Alex Lehmann: They were so enjoyable to work with, and I got to know them as people, as artists. The three of us—we laughed so hard the month of filming. I've never laughed that hard in my life and, yet, we still got the work done too. So it was a really enjoyable process. I'd say if anybody has the opportunity to make a movie with Pete and Kaley, they should jump at the opportunity.
So even if the blocking and the dialogue was the same, they're now in a different emotional space and headspace. They're on the ferry having a great time one day, and it's still the first date and one of the last times they're on the ferry, they've been through some stuff, and they're carrying that. Even if Gary doesn't totally understand that he's carrying it. It's emotional time travel that makes it seem different.
