STARTING July 1, 2023, overseas Filipinos who are in distress or in conflict with the law should seek assistance with the labor attache or welfare officers instead of consuls or the ambassadors.

In a notice to the public, the Department of Foreign Affairs said it would be turning over its functions in assisting overseas Filipinos workers to the Department of Migrant Workers in compliance with the law creating the new department. “Under said law, all assistance cases involving OFWs including legal or medical assistance, repatriation and shipment of remains shall now be handled by the DMW, through the use of its Aksyon Fund,” the DFA said.

In countries or territories where there are no resident Migrant Workers Offices , the Philippine Embassy or Consulate will take over the function of assistance to nationals. “To ensure uninterrupted service to our OFWs, the public is requested to refer to the DMW al requests for assistance involving OFWs—whether documented or undocumented,” it added.
