Metro Parks used taxpayers' money to cover more than 75% of the taxes on a Hocking Hills retreat leased to developer Mark Wagenbrenner and others.
The audit's findings came after athat for a decade Metro Parks leased the 4,700-square-foot Benua House above a small lake at Clear Creek Metro Park in the Hocking Hills to groups that Mark Wagenbrenner led.
People involved in real estate in that area told The Dispatch that such a site could get a nightly rate higher than what the group was paying Metro Parks for an entire month. The state audit, which was for the years 2020 and 2021, said Metro Parks officials were responsible for monitoring the lease agreements and collecting the unpaid property taxes.Metro Parks owned the Benua House as part of parkland it owns in the Hocking Hills area. Usually, an entity such as Metro Parks would not being paying taxes on such a building because park property is tax exempt.
