Aged care facilities across Australia are facing a “workforce crisis” following the latest board requirement of 24/7 registered nurses, says Shadow Aged Home Care Minister Anne Ruston.

“It’s felt most acutely in rural and regional remote Australia,” she told Sky News host Amanda Stoker.

“It’s been hugely exacerbated by the bringing forward of requirements for 24/7 … registered nurses on site in aged care facilities no matter where they are with a very, very small exemption.“We’re already seeing nursing homes closing down because they just don’t believe they’re going to be able to meet these requirements – it’s absolutely devastating.

“We need to make sure we’ve got a flexible framework and then allow the individual to make the choices that actually suit their particular circumstances – because I think we have taken a very much one-size-fits-all approach and it’s simply not working.”
