The World Baseball Classic is proving again to be internationally popular, but at great risk to players and their major league teams.
The problem is WBC supporters would accuse MLB of sabotaging the entire tournament. The clubs could use that authority to starve the WBC of its biggest stars.highest-salaried players who’d be subject to the club’s stay-at-camp decree. But that wouldn’t be the final word. Players would be allowed to overrule the club, although not without risk.
His injury was a one in a million. It’s not like he felt a twinge in his arm and, wanting to preserve Puerto Rico’s victory over the Dominican Republic, kept pitching and subsequently blew out his arm. Perhaps making the players fractionally responsible for the cost would force everyone involved to think long and hard about whether the WBC is worth it.
