New Zealand’s move to kickstart its own offshore wind industry will reduce the threat of project delays in Australia because critical suppliers will prioritise the region, industry executives said.
Swelling competition, New Zealand has also moved to develop its own offshore wind industry. It has asked for submissions by mid April on its legislation governing the industry that it intends to implement by 2024.Several industry heavyweights, including Danish powerhouse Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, which will partner with New Zealand Super, as well as OceanEx and Bluefloat, have announced intentions to develop in New Zealand.
Charles Rattray, chief executive of Star of the South, which is on course to become Australia’s first offshore wind development, last year said the country riskedDelays to Star of the South would be particularly damaging to Victoria. To meet its goal of having offshore wind generate, Victoria will need Star of the South, backed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and super fund Cbus, to come online on schedule in 2028.
Regulators have not spelled out how many licences are expected to be issued. A final decision on applications could take as long as 90 days.
