Texas Democratic Party chairman Gilberto Hinojosa said everyone needs to give O’Rourke some space. But he said there’s no doubt in his mind that the party is going to need him in the future.Obviously, the election didn’t turn out how O’Rourke or the Democrats would have liked, but Hinojosa said it is important to consider what O’Rourke just did.

But O’Rourke still pulled in 44 percent of the vote, the highest percentage for a Democratic candidate since the late Ann Richards won 46 percent in losing to former Gov. George W. Bush in 1994.spend more than $139 million to win a third termFormer San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro said even in defeat, O’Rourke has moved the party forward by investing in infrastructure and building a network of donors and volunteers through his campaigns that no Democrat in Texas can match.

The next U.S. Senate race in Texas will be in 2024, when Cruz is up for re-election again, but he’s also eyeing another run at the White House. But Hinojosa said O’Rourke has proven to be an expensive and dangerous problem for Republicans, and much of his work will help Democrats in 2024 and beyond.
