Biden is visiting the Buckeye State on Friday for the groundbreaking of Intel’s massive new factory in the Columbus area.

Ryan, who sponsored the bill containing the CHIPS Act, also will be there, after the Youngstown congressman gave the president the cold shoulder in his previous appearances in Ohio this year. So will Ro Khanna, a Democratic California congressman and potential future presidential candidate whose district includes Intel’s corporate headquarters and the rest of Silicon Valley. Sen. Sherrod Brown, the longtime Ohio Democrat, is scheduled to come, too.

Some factors could be geographical – Ohio is closer to Washington, D.C. than say, Arizona,. But Biden’s travel schedule also points toward him viewing Ohio as more of a swing state than how it’s generally perceived after Trump twice won the state and as Republicans have dominated statewide elections.

Vance echoed that thinking in an interview earlier this week at a Putnam County Republican Party event in Western Ohio. A Super PAC with close ties to Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel this week Ryan, meanwhile, has said the event transcends any steps he’s taken to carve out a political lane separate from Biden.
