Stone Age humans were able to build huge structures based on detailed plans engraved in stone, researchers say.
Collapsed boulders in Jebel az-Zilliyat, Saudi Arabia, where two desert kite engravings have been discovered. The engravings reveal a hitherto unknown architectural sophistication in Stone Age people.If your understanding of Stone Age humans is one of primitive cave people bashing rocks together, then perhaps it’s time to think again.
The research centers on two monoliths around 7,000 and 9,000 years old, one from Jordan and one from Saudi Arabia. Both were discovered in 2015 by Rémy Crassard, an archaeologist at the French National Center for Scientific Research, and his team. “They reveal a widely underestimated mental mastery of space perception, hitherto never observed at this level of accuracy in such an early context.”
