Quarterback Derek Gibney has rewritten the record book at Susquenita capturing most school passing records during his stellar Blackhawk tenure.
On Sept. 6, he broke the school’s passing touchdown record in grand style as he completed 18 of 29 attempts for 352 yards and five TDs in Susquenita’s 42-14 home victory over Newport. The senior has now thrown 47 career touchdowns, eclipsing Glenn Mullen’s previous top mark of 42.
“I’m very proud of the whole team,” said Susquenita skipper Rick Gibney. “Derek has been playing quarterback for four years; he just goes out there and slings it. All season we have been trying to establish a running game and really haven’t been able to. Tonight, we got the running game going which opened up our passing lanes. We have a great corps of receivers, they got open and did a great job finding them. It was just a good game offensively all around for us .
“I was very happy with the first drive,” said Rothermel. “We just put that punt formation in tonight, we got the look we wanted, the kids executed, and on top of it we were able to finish the drive and lead for the first time all season.” Corey Warren finished the opening drive of the second half with a 26-yard field goal to up the margin to 22-7.
Newport’s final drive consumed all but the last second of the clock as Bates led a 14-play, 81-yard scoring march.
