From captivity, to truck, to barge, to acclimation site, to release — that's the upcoming path for a group of about 70 wood bison.
The selected sites in and adjacent to the Minto Flats Refuge for the wood bison acclimation site enclosures are shown.Published: Apr. 10, 2024 at 5:50 PM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is preparing to ship approximately 70 Wood Bison up the Tanana River this summer.
“They’ll be fixed with radio collars and get last health checks and things like that, and then they’ll be loaded into specialized containers that we have for moving bison,” Wood Bison Restoration Project Biologist Tom Seaton said in a Wednesday phone interview. A planning team voted on a location for the soft release area, selecting land in and adjacent to the Minto Flats State Game Refuge, about 60 miles west of Fairbanks. The biologist added the chosen spot also bodes well for food sources. “Their preferred food in the wintertime is wet sedge, and the amount of wet sedge meadows near this release site is really high compared to many other places in Interior Alaska,” he said.
“We’ll hold them over the winter and then release them around green-up, right after calving, next spring,” Seaton said. The Wood Bison Restoration project began in the early 1990s with a goal of reintroducing the species to parts of their former range in Interior Alaska.
