Mayor Michael Hancock argues the 'top-down' approach to housing won't work. An amended version of SB-213 passed through senate committee Tuesday night.
DENVER – The proposed land use bill that has the backing of Colorado Gov. Jared Polis “will not work” and would “set precedents we should never allow to happen,” according to Denver Mayor Michael Hancock.
Hancock, among other opponents of the bill, have taken issue with the “top-down” approach that takes control away from local governments. “I think what the governor is attempting to do is laudable,” he said. “We need to address affordable housing, we need to address it on the state level, but we simply got to make sure we're not doing it by preempting local control. As well as a top-down approach, it should be a collaborative approach.”
