The resolution passed 4-3 Tuesday night following several hours of comments from the public and council members that was at times emotional and contentious.

The vote was one of the most notable actions by a local government in the state since the nation’s high court made the momentous decision Friday. Several hundred abortion-rights advocates gathered outside Denton City Hall ahead of the vote, which came after more than two hours of public comment that was at times emotional and contentious.

The resolution is meant to affirm the right of people to make their own private reproductive health care decisions by directing Denton police to make enforcement of those laws their lowest priority. It also recommends not using city funds for those investigations. More than 300 people rallied in support of the resolution outside Denton City Hall during the council meeting. Inside the building, demonstrators could be heard chanting “My body, my choice.” At one point, a council member said he was having a hard time hearing because the noise.

Those opposed argued city officials should focus on other issues and not break state law, with at least one person citing a Bible verse.
