Hundreds of homes were demolished in Ifa Ikot Okpon, Akwa Ibom State, displacing over 182 people and 52 families. Victims allege lack of prior notice and compensation, while the state government remains silent.

For the residents of Ifa Ikot Okpon in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, the 2024 Christmas season was marked by tragedy and displacement. Hundreds of homes were demolished by the state government, leaving over 182 people and 52 families homeless. The community now lies in ruins, and those who had their properties marked for demolition live in fear of an impending calamity.

Pastor Kokoete Sunday Edah, a victim of the demolition, shared his harrowing experience, detailing how his house and church were razed to the ground without prior warning or compensation. He explained that government officials had valued his property and assured him of fair compensation and ample notice, but these promises were broken. On December 19th, while he was away from home, Edah received a call that his building was being torn down by bulldozers. He returned to find his entire life's possessions destroyed, leaving him and his family without a place to live. Edah's story is echoed by over fifty other victims who gathered at the village hall, Ifa. They all reported receiving similar assurances of compensation and notice, but ultimately faced a sudden and devastating demolition of their homes. Charles Bassey, a retired journalist and victim, questioned the rationale behind the demolition, pointing out that the affected area was not designated for government acquisition according to the Uyo master plan. He also questioned the state's decision to use the land for a judges' estate, especially considering the plight of the displaced residents. Another victim, 75-year-old Anthony Thomas Ekot, expressed his despair over losing his home at such an advanced age and questioned how he would ever rebuild. The demolition has also resulted in a wave of looting and scavenging, with street urchins and area boys exploiting the situation to their advantage
