The Historic and Design Review Commission approved the first part of a long-delayed project in Brackenridge Park, despite continued opposition to removal of trees.
District 1 Councilman Mario Bravo meets with residents after a hearing by San Antonio Parks and Recreation and Public Works Departments over the Brackenridge Park Bond Project on Tuesday, Apr. 26, 2022. There has been numerous points of contention between stakeholders in the past few months. The departments discussed the future of the project and residents spoke at the hearing as well.
One of the key issues opponents raised is the destruction of 40 healthy native trees, including six heritage trees with trunks exceeding 24 inches in diameter and the relocation of 19 others in the first phase. Eight trees that are dead, dying or invasive also will be removed. “It defies logic that we would not do everything we can to preserve these trees for future generations,” said Patricia Pratchett, a River Road resident.
A scope of work presented last year to the HDRC said the project will “prevent rookeries from developing and causing unhealthy environments.” But bird advocates oppose the city’s use of noisemakers to shoo birds away and have said project officials have overstated the environmental problems posed by bird feces.
