SALT LAKE CITY — The Gateway Inn Motel on North Temple in Salt Lake City has been an infamous crime-ridden hotel since its early days. In fact, project manager Kevin Orr says the demolition required hazardous clean-up to get rid of bed bugs in mattresses, drug paraphernalia, and splattered blood on walls.
Likewise, Fairpark Community Council Chairman Nigel Swaby says the issue of crime at this hotel is what inspired him to get into local politics. "I think this will be the tipping point where businesses and retailers want to be in the Fairpark neighborhood on North Temple," he said. "There's been a decrease, but it's also they're taking down where the roaches hide, don't mean the roaches ain't going to find somewhere else to stay," Broussard said.
