Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, a Republican, is facing heavy backlash for remarks about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., less than a day after her husband was the victim of a brutal attack in their San Francisco home.

Van Susteren asked Youngkin twice whether he’d like a “do-over” on his comments or to apologize, which Youngkin deflected, instead opting to again condemn the violent attack.

“The fact that someone broke into their home and assaulted him so violently is just beyond belief,” Youngkin told Newsmax. “It is tragic. And I just lift them up in our prayers.”“As the governor clearly said, the assault on Paul Pelosi was wrong and there is no place for violence. He wishes him a full recovery and is keeping the Pelosi family in his prayers," Macaulay Porter, a spokeswoman for Youngkin said, in a statement emailed to USA TODAY.Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Ted Cruz of Texas, plus House GOP Whip Steve Scalise, also decried the attack.
