Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota launched his bid for the presidency. That makes Phillips the first sitting lawmaker to take on President Biden.
AGE 54 - Dean Phillips stepped off of his campaign bus at the New Hampshite Statehouse where he filed a declaration of candidacy to run for the New Hampshire presidential primary Friday, Oct. 27, 2023 Concord, Minn. "I am running for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States because, my friends, it is time for a change," Phillips explained during his campaign launch. "And I am ready to lead our great nation to a secure and a more prosperous future.
Phillips' chances might be a long shot. That same poll shows 68% of Democrats are enthusiastic about Biden becoming the party's nominee again. President Biden is proud of the historic, unified support he has from across the Democratic party for his reelection. The stakes of next year’s election could not be higher for the American people, and the campaign is hard at work mobilizing the winning coalition that President Biden can uniquely bring together, to once again beat the MAGA Republicans next November.
Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., told ABC News he finds the idea of a Phillips launch in New Hampshire "divisive, and it's disrespectful to a large population and support base for the Democratic Party.", the Democratic National Committee now recognizes South Carolina as its first primary state. The DNC made the change to elevate more diverse voters earlier on the national stage.
