Lt. Governor democratic nominee Mike Collier speaks at the Non-Urban/Rural Caucus, Friday, July 15, 2022, in Dallas.Mike Collier, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, plans to launch his first television ad of the 2022 campaign next week, with a 30-second spot focused on the Texas power grid and the response of his opponent, Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, to last year’s winter freeze.
“With four months to close a narrow 4-point gap, this is the next step in a multimillion-dollar effort to remind millions of Texans that in the wake of a catastrophic, deadly freeze, their energy prices skyrocketed while Dan Patrick put his rich campaign donors on the ERCOT board,” Collier campaign manager Ali S. Zaidi said in a statement.Nevertheless, Patrick has a huge financial advantage over Collier, allowing him to easily match his Democratic challenger on the airwaves.
“Democrats remain tone deaf to the public as they refuse to secure the border, address crime in our cities and their dogged pursuit of inflationary economic policies,” he said.over whether Texas’ power grid can withstand high summer temperatures. As electricity demand has nearly reached the grid’s capacity in recent weeks, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas has asked residents to voluntarily reduce their power usage.
Last year, in response to the deadly power failures in the February 2021 freeze, state lawmakers overhauled ERCOT’s board of directors and required power companies to upgrade their plants to hold up during future storms.
