The Black Swan is a fixed-wing purpose-built drone about the size of a two-seater Cessna, with a wingspan of 50 feet and a length of 25 feet.
It’s a prop-driven airplane with a 140-horsepower four-cylinder engine that runs on regular or synthetic gasoline, though Dronamics is investigating hydrogen fuel.
“The drones are always within control of humans,” Rangelov says. “So we have an autopilot on board, but we always have human operators who are actually commercially trained pilots that are in charge. We have two pilots at the origin, two pilots at the destination. So instead of one cockpit per vehicle, we have one cockpit per location.
One of the benefits of the small aircraft: quick take-off and landing, which reduces the need to go to a large standard airfield.
