Del Valle ISD starts 2nd high school build near SH 130; opens 2026.

Del Valle ISD commenced construction on a second high school in the growing Whisper Valley area near SH 130, addressing increased enrollment spurred by the nearby Tesla Gigafactory. The Del Valle Independent School District on Friday invited the public to a ground-breaking for its newest public school. Their student population has grown so much in recent years that a major expansion is needed.

A huge piece of land in the northern extremes of the Del Valle school district is undergoing a transformation. Then again so is the school district. Superintendent Annette Tielle explains, “It isn't often that a community builds a second high school. And when you do build that second high school in a community that's been a one-high-school town for so long, it truly is a historic moment.

The district held a ceremony to mark the official start of construction in the Whisper Valley community east of SH 130. The district has been planning this new addition since the nearby Tesla Gigafactory started gearing up. Tielle explains, “At that time, we experienced what we're calling the Tesla effect where we had a large enrollment and an exponential growth at the high school.

Right now, the site is in an undeveloped part of the neighborhood, but it won't take long for a future phase to surround the school with new homes. Developer Douglas Gilliand says, “The SH 130 corridor now is where most of the housing is happening in the city, so we're right in the heart of where the growth is going and so we're excited."Gilliland believes this new high school... and a new middle school and elementary to follow... are just what homeowners are looking for.

The new high school doesn't have a name yet, but it will have a lot of colors... especially inside. Tielle explains, “The interior of the building is going to be made up of a color spectrum of Hornsby Elementary, Gilbert Elementary, and Dailey Middle School which are the three schools that will be feeding into this campus as well as part of Baty Elementary."
