Fake images showing the arrest of former president Donald Trump have gone viral as America waits to see whether he will be charged over hush money payments to a porn star in 2016.
Speaking to The Washington Post, Mr Higgins said he had not expected the deepfakes to have such an impact.The images come days after Mr Trump issued a call for supporters to"protest, take our nation back" as he claimed he was about to be arrested in relation to a long-running New York investigation.
There is almost no precedent for such a prosecution and even those pushing Mr Trump's indictment admit the case is not clear cut, with a lot hanging on the testimony of Mr Cohen. As the deepfakes spread across social media some users suggested the images were real, fuelling concerns about the use of AI in spreading potentially harmful misinformation.
