Controversial Liberal MP Moira Deeming has been suspended, but not expelled, from the party after attending an anti-trans rally that was gate-crashed by neo-Nazis.
Victorian opposition leader John Pesutto believes his leadership is intact and the Liberals can win the next election despite turning his back on a commitment to oust
But after Monday’s meeting, Mr Pesutto said he put forward a suspension proposal because Ms Deeming had condemned Nazism and bigotry against the LGBTQI community earlier that morning. He said it marked a “turning point” for the party despite the backflip and said “yes” when asked if he believed he would still be the leader when Ms Deeming returns in nine months.
Deputy Liberal leader David Southwick, who is Jewish, said while events at the Let Women Speak rally, where a group of masked men performed Nazi salutes on the steps of Victoria’s parliament, had been “very hurtful” for his community, he believed Ms Deeming deserved a second chance. Former Labor strategist turned pollster Kos Samaras said Mr Pesutto had damaged his standing by not following through with an expulsion.

Moira Deeming’s speech to Liberal Party brought ‘the room to tears’Sky News host Peta Credlin has shared the speech Victorian Liberal Party MP Moira Deeming gave to defend herself from possible expulsion which “brought some in the room to tears”. “It’s about as powerful and raw as I’ve seen in politics,” Ms Credlin said. “Pesutto and his office, they went off half-cocked in the demonisation of Moira Deeming. “They didn’t fact check the primary source material in the footnotes, not at all, they condemned Deeming without an actual justice. “If the Liberal Party will no longer welcome conservatives into its ranks, well the conservative side of politics really is in diabolical trouble.”
