From the dances to the pep rallies to the demonstrations, the William Penn High School alumni will have plenty to remember long after the buildings are demolished.

If demolition is approved at the board’s June 27 meeting, the building, completed in 1926, will disappear, but memories will remain with those who graduated from the once stately high school near Italian Lake.

He recalled belonging to the National Honor Society, being elected class president and leading the school pep rallies, a task that resulted in his classmates voting him student with the most school spirit. Dances were held in the school cafeteria, and students elected a May queen who, along with her court, sailed on a float across Italian Lake. In winter, when the lake froze, students gathered to ice skate and build bonfires.

Guarnera also played on a newly resurrected golf team, where he was the highest-ranked player, even though his scores hovered around 100. He recalled one team member, who had never played golf, shot 215 his first round at Blue Ridge Country Club.
