The death toll from a 'significant' earthquake that struck Papua New Guinea on Sunday has risen to seven, the Pacific island nation's police commissioner said, adding that it occurred deep below ground which limited damage.

Manolos Aviation/Handout via REUTERSSYDNEY, Sept 12 - The death toll from a "significant" earthquake that struck Papua New Guinea on Sunday has risen to seven, the Pacific island nation's police commissioner said, adding that it occurred deep below ground which limited damage.

"Sadly, seven people have been confirmed dead as a result of these landslides. Three in Kabwum District and three in Wau Town, Morobe Province, and one in Rai Coast, Madang Province," he said. Aviation company Manolos Aviation organised medical evacuations from Kombul village in Kabwum district.
