KUCHING: The law on prostitution should be amended to criminalise those paying for sexual services, says the Sarawak Women for Women Society (SWWS).

It said that while soliciting or importuning for the purpose of prostitution was a crime under Section 372B of the Penal Code, those using such services were not criminalised under the law.

“Section 372B only punishes one side of the party, that is the women, as it is only the women who would be deemed to solicit or importune for the purpose of prostitution, ” it said in a statement on Thursday . In the case, a 34-year-old woman was fined RM3,000 in default of two months' jail by the Sibu Magistrate's Court on Oct 1 for prostitution. It was reported that she did not pay the fine for either charge.

“Prostitution only exists if there is a client prepared to pay a fee for a service he wants, yet it is the woman who is penalised rather than the man.
