A stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela festival in northern India has claimed the lives of nearly 40 people. The incident occurred yesterday as millions of Hindu devotees gathered for bathing rituals in the sacred Ganges River. Police sources stated that the bodies of the victims are still at the Moti Lal Nehru Medical College Hospital morgue, over 12 hours after the tragedy. Authorities have yet to release an official death toll. Witnesses described a massive crush as people surged toward the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers for the ritual bath, believed to cleanse sins. The tragedy is attributed to a combination of overcrowding and devotees attempting to breach security barriers.

Malah, ada juga yang mengatakan laluan yang ditutup mengakibatkan kesesakan, sehingga menyebabkan jemaah rebah akibat sesak nafas.“Ibu saya rebah, kemudian kakak ipar saya. Orang ramai melangkah dan berlari di atas mereka,” kata Jagwanti Devi, 40, yang duduk di dalam ambulans bersama mayat keluarganya.
Perdana Menteri India, Narendra Modi, menyampaikan ucapan takziah kepada keluarga mangsa dan memaklumkan pihak berkuasa tempatan sedang membantu mangsa dengan segala cara.
