GEORGE TOWN: The carcasses of 10 cats were dumped in a rubbish bin in Jelutong here owing to the lack of a designated animal burial or cremation facility.

Penang Veterinary Services Department director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab said the findings were made after the department investigated the animal shelter owner, the Penang Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ."According to the owner, the cats were already dead and were disposed of that way because the shelter doesn't have a proper burial or cremation site," she said in a statement on Monday .

Dr Saira Banu said DVS officers who inspected SPCA's premises found no carcasses of cats or other animals. She said no signs of abuse or cruelty to animals were detected during the inspection, which was carried out after a complaint was received on Friday morning. She added that DVS could not confirm the cause of death of the cats that were dumped as the carcasses had been removed by unknown individuals.Dr Saira Banu said the department took the matter seriously and reminded SPCA management to handle animals that die from illness or other causes appropriately.

A 29-second viral video, which has been widely circulated online, showed several dead cats dumped in a rubbish bin by the roadside near an SPCA office.Search underway for missing teenager in Kota Belud
