Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is set to implement a charge of RM1 for foreigners using specific GOKL bus routes starting January 1, 2025. This follows a phased rollout of charges on other routes since the beginning of 2024. The affected routes are 05 (Orange), 06 (Pink), and 08 (Maroon). While Malaysians continue to enjoy free travel upon registering their ICs with Touch ‘n Go, the new charges have sparked mixed reactions from the public.
Yesterday (Monday, December 16), The Kuala Lumpur City Hall ( DBKL ) announced that, starting in 2025, foreigners will be charged RM1 for certain routes of their GOKL bus service. This charge on foreigners has been implemented in stages on other routes since the beginning of 2024. DBKL wrote, “From January 1, 2025, Kuala Lumpur City Hall ( DBKL ) will charge non-citizens for the use of GOKL bus services on Route 05 (Orange), Route 06 (Pink) and Route 08 (Maroon).
” “Route 05 (Orange) involves the route from Titiwangsa Hub to MINDEF, Route 06 (Pink) involves the route from the Universiti LRT Station to PPR Seri Pantai, and Route 08 (Maroon) involves the route from the Kampung Batu KTM/MRT Station to Chow Kit.” For Malaysians, GOKL bus services remain complimentary upon the registration of their ICs with the Touch ‘n Go system and complimentary for children aged 12 and below without registration requirements. However, these new charges implemented for foreigners have left Malaysians with mixed reactions as some believe it is unfair while others think it should have been applied a long time ago. “Discrimination against non-citizen users. This very much shouldn’t be implemented. Please, DBKL, re-evaluate this. Ensure fair rights for all users.” “This is good, I agree, it’s been long-awaited.” “This is very good. Benefits need to be prioritised for Malaysians. Good job, DBKL.” “(Only) RM1? They should charge according to distance as foreigners are not eligible for subsidies under the government.” What do you think about this? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
