The Macallum Street Ghaut pasar malam in Penang is now back in business.
Despite strict standard operating procedures and regulations, the night market was brimming with people, especially residents from the nearby area.
The visitors from all walks of life, who started patronising the night market as early as 5pm on Monday, wore face masks and had their temperature checked before they were allowed to enter the night market.Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the night market resumed its operation after considering the plight of traders who lost their livelihood during the three-month closure.
“We realised that the resumption of the night market is quite troublesome with the strict rules and SOPs, but we have to consider the traders who have been missing their income during the MCO.Gooi said about 30 personnel were roped in by the Lebuh Macallum Village Community Management Council to help in the enforcement and monitoring of the SOPs at the night market.
The night market’s operating hours are from 5pm to 10pm, but traders are allowed to set up their stall an hour early.“Traders are only allowed to sell takeaway food to their customers.“So far, everything is in order although there was some slight hiccup in the initial stages of the operation, ” he said.
Gooi said the new norm had given them new challenges but also an opportunity to solve traffic congestion at the night market.
