Dave Bautista reacts to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 being the end, according to writer/director James Gunn, calling it a full-circle journey. Bautista made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Gunn's first Guardians of the Galaxy as Drax the Destroyer, a warrior seeking revenge against Thanos and Ronan the Accuser for the murder of his wife and kids. The former WWE star has carried the role through the first Guardians of the Galaxy sequel and both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Plot details surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are currently unknown, though it is expected to see the titular team face off against the powerful Adam Warlock, created by the Sovereign to get revenge on them for their actions in the previous film. Development on the film took a rocky path when Gunn was dismissed by Disney and Marvel for a brief time before being reinstated after Warner Bros. scooped him up to write and direct The Suicide Squad. "It's our third film, we're gonna wrap it up. And it's been a hell of a journey with a few bumps. So, I'm looking forward to this, man. My cast and obviously the director, James Gunn, they're like family to me. This is kind of where my journey started. It's come full circle and I'm looking forward to wrapping it up. And it's bittersweet. I mean, I've been doing Guardians since 2013.
Bautista's note of the journey having a few bumps is one of the better-known secrets of the MCU in recent years thanks to Gunn's brief firing, which he and his co-stars were vehemently against and was considered unceremonious by those aware of the filmmaker's controversial tweets and subsequent apologies over the years. Bautista also notably didn't reprise his role as Drax for Disney+'s What If...
Despite the various bumps in the road, it should still come as soothing to fans to hear Bautista reflect on the full-circle journey leading up to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Even prior to Gunn's recent confirmation that the film would be the end of the original team, Bautista had expressed the film would likely be his final go as Drax in the MCU, though did state the character wouldn't die in the film.
